eWallet providers to increase capacity after overwhelming eTunai response

The first day of the eTunai Rakyat on January 15 2020 saw an overwhelming response by Malaysians toward the RM30 incentive, with a reported RM10 million in expenditure recorded over the first day of the campaign. However, users reported issues while attempting to redeem their incentive from certain eWallets, with providers seemingly unable to handle the increased traffic on their mobile applications.

Touch n’ Go eWallet and Boost have assured users that they’ve taken necessary steps to improve the situation, and normal service should resume. According to a statement from Touch ‘n Go Digital:

“Touch ’n Go eWallet is experiencing high traffic volume on our app due to the overwhelming response of e-Tunai Rakyat claims to-date. As of 12pm, January 15, 2020, our app has increased its capacity to process the increasing user traffic and seeing a higher success rate in the number of claimants. We truly appreciate your patience as our team is working effortlessly to assure that our app is back to its optimal efficiency phase in the quickest time possible.”

Meanwhile, Boost’s CEO, Mohd Khairil Abdullah has also stated that Boost’s system is up and running, and there should be no issues for redemptions.

“The Boost app and e-Tunai Rakyat claims mechanism are up and running smoothly and users can use our e-wallet to claim their RM30 with no issues. We will also be offering a cash prize of up to RM8,888 as an additional reward to those who submit the claim with Boost.”

Users have been complaining about delays in applying for the incentive on eWallets, although it’s notable that Grab and Boost seemingly handled the increased traffic better than Touch ‘n Go eWallet. Perhaps a part of that is due to the super-app nature of Grab, with multiple services offered on the Grab platform. Boost, for their part, has also appeared to handle the increased traffic well.

From our own experience, the RM30 was disbursed within a few hours at the most for applicants on the Grab app, while Boost users also reported fast redemption times. However, Vernon only received his RM30 today, a full 24 hours after his initial application.
