Report: The Galaxy Bloom is the next foldable phone from Samsung

Foldable phones seem to be the future. We’ve already seen the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X in China, and we’ve all seen the Motorola Razr and it’s throwback form-factor, too. The second foldable smartphone from Samsung is under development, too, and leaks have already shown that the next Galaxy Fold will look rather similar to the Razr. Now, a report has surfaced that claims that the new Samsung foldable will be called the Samsung Galaxy Bloom.

The new name was allegedly revealed in a closed-doors meeting with key partners during CES 2020 by Samsung mobile division CEO, DJ Koh. Strangely enough, the report also says that the design of the Galaxy Bloom is inspired by the powder compact from Lancome—supposedly part of Samsung’s strategy to target female customers in their 20s.

Other details from the report are that the name, “Bloom”, was chosen due to how a flower blooms—and how the phone will fold. Interestingly, the Galaxy Bloom, as well as the upcoming Galaxy S20, could also feature 8K video recording, which would make sense given the fact that Samsung are producing 8K TVs, and one of the main obstacles is the scarcity of available 8K content.

Perhaps a more relevant snippet is that the Galaxy Bloom’s display panel will be covered with an ultra-thin glass called UTG (Ultra Thin Glass), which could possibly help with the durability of the display, as well as address the crease issue of the Galaxy Fold.

It appears that the Galaxy Bloom won’t be a second version of the Galaxy Fold, after all (or a third, if you include the infamous original Fold review units). Instead, the Galaxy Bloom will be a second device in Samsung’s foldable range.

That Galaxy Fold is seemingly doing well, in any case. During CES 2020, Koh also shared that Samsung sold between 400,000 to 500,000 units of the Galaxy Fold—RM3.2 billion. The launch of the Galaxy Bloom is expected to take place on the 11th of February in San Francisco, and while we don’t have the details on the Bloom’s pricing yet, we’re pretty sure it won’t come cheap.
