ThinkBook Plus: This is Lenovo’s idea of a “new laptop category”

The conventional form factor of the laptop is due for a refresh, and we’ve already seen a host of brands offer convertibles, 2-in-1 laptops, and more. But Lenovo has just announced a “new laptop category” at CES 2020 that’s targeted towards the “new generation”—and it’s called the ThinkBook Plus.

From certain angles, the ThinkBook Plus looks pretty conventional, but it features a secondary 10.8″ display on its cover that uses e-Ink technology to complement the 13.3″ FHD IPS main display. The e-Ink display, according to Lenovo, can be used by users to create illustrations and diagrams with the integrated Lenovo Precision pen, and users can also view notifications on the display even when the lid is closed, just like how flip-phones of the past.

Lenovo also says that the ThinkBook Plus comes with a set of features that are designed to help users with multitasking efficiency. There’s integrated Amazon Alexa which can be used while the laptop is closed, while the e-Ink display can be used to review documents, jot notes, and even “respond quickly” to emails and updates—all while the laptop lid is closed.

Specs-wise, the ThinkBook Plus can be configured at up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i7 processor, with memory options of up to 16GB of RAM along with 512GB of onboard storage. Unfortunately, it looks like there won’t be an option for discrete graphics, with Lenovo saying that the ThinkBook Plus is designed for work-purposes (still, the option would have been nice).

It’s certainly an interesting concept, and it remains to be seen if there are more uses for the e-Ink display. Perhaps users will be able to load e-books to read, just like a Kindle—e-Ink displays supposedly strain your eyes less as opposed to LCD displays.

But it certainly won’t come cheap. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus is expected to be available from March 2020 with a starting price of US$1,199 (about RM4,905), while you can also pick up accessories like the Bluetooth Silent Mouse from April 2020 at a starting price of US$39.99 (about RM163) and the ThinkBook Plus Sleeve at US$44.99 (about RM184).
