Before Apple introduces its iPhone 12 later this year, the Cupertino company appears to be releasing a new iPhone that could replace its old iPhone SE. It is rumoured to be called the iPhone 9 or possible the iPhone SE 2.
If you recall, the iPhone SE at the time of launch was a relatively new flagship device that’s packed in a compact and familiar form factor. Apple seems to be doing the same thing for this device and we have a clearer look thanks to renders from serial leakster @OnLeaks.
In terms of design, it looks identical to the iPhone 8 as it features a 4.7″ Retina Display with thick bottom and chin. On top of that, you also get a non-mechanical home button which comes with Touch ID. If you’re not a fan of Face ID, this could be the iPhone for you. Since this is a 2020 device, the new iPhone is said to be running on the latest A13 Bionic processor which is the same chip that’s powering the current iPhone 11 series.
For imaging, it only comes with a single rear camera and it could be using the same 12MP sensor as the iPhone 11 that offers night mode and stabilised 4K video recording. We do hope that Apple would bump the front camera to 12MP which enables 4K selfie videos but it is likely to be the old 7MP shooter to keep the cost down.
According to @Onleaks, the new iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2 is slightly thicker at 7.8mm versus 7.3mm on the iPhone 8. Hopefully, this could mean a better battery but perhaps it is thicker to accommodate a frosted glass back like the current iPhone 11. Unfortunately, there’s no headphone jack but the glass back could be an indication that it would support wireless charging.
The iPhone SE was initially released in Malaysia with a starting price below RM2,000 and we expect this new budget compact iPhone to hover around the RM2,500 price range. At the moment, the iPhone 8 64GB is retailing for RM2,199 while the iPhone XR 64GB is still listed at RM2,899. If Apple is releasing this device in Malaysia, it could sit right between these two models or perhaps it can replace the iPhone 8 permanently.
In a way, you can view this as an “iPhone 11” in an iPhone 8 body since the iPhone SE was basically packing iPhone 6s hardware in an iPhone 5s shell. This could be an important device for Apple in order to retain its existing user base that prefers the familiar iPhone screen and home button layout. What do you think?
