TM first in the world to trial 5G SA on both 700MHz and 3.5GHz

TM has announced that they are the first to successfully conduct a Standalone (SA) dedicated 5G network mode test on both C-band (3.5GHz) and 700MHz simultaneously on a converged 5G core network. This was achieved less than a month since its C-band SA was put on air and it is said to be the first 700MHz 5G SA network outside of China.

According to TM, the Standalone (SA) architecture brings new 5G capabilities such as ultra-low latency and advanced network-slicing functions which will enable many new use cases for enterprises. Unlike early 5G networks that are based on NSA (Non-Standalone), the SA network does not rely on 4G as an anchor.

When combined with the 700MHz spectrum, this setup will ensure an increased coverage nationwide which can deliver 5G services at more populated areas. The 700MHz spectrum will enable fast and wide 5G deployment and with the 3.5GHz spectrum, TM says they are ready to take on traffic of multiple network operators on top of the enterprise verticals.

According to TM Group CEO, Dato’ Noor Kamarul, the many firsts accomplishment by TM in recent weeks are a testament of its commitment to accelerate the delivery of 5G services nationwide. The operator assured that 5G can be delivered in the most efficient manner to benefit the rollout and the nation. He added that TM has developed its own 5G uses cases which are developed by their very own in-house TM R&D team and they are embedded with security, real-time analytics and artificial intelligence.

The CEO also said that as a national telecommunications infrastructure provider, they aspire not only to enable the ecosystem but also to be a neutral partner for industry players and collaboration partners towards serving the digital society, lifestyle, businesses and industry verticals.

TM is also participating in the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP). They have embarked on 11 use cases in Langkawi and have deployed an 5G Command Centre (5GCC). TM has the highest number of use cases deployed on the duty-free island and they claim to achieve 1.5Gbps for 5G speed tests conducted at the use cases sites. The 5G use cases cover a variety of verticals which include safety and security, analytics and smart agriculture.
