The Huawei P40 might have a worse camera setup than the P30 Pro

After Huawei recent issues with Google and the U.S. Department of Commerce in general, it’s certainly interesting to see what the Chinese company comes up with next. The next flagship from them should be the Huawei P40 series, although not much is known about the upcoming flagship at this present time.

However, an image of the Huawei P40’s camera assembly, apparently taken at a factory production line, gives us an indication as to the P40’s photography capabilities.

It appears that the P40 will have three cameras—however, based on the circular shape of the lens cutouts, it looks like none of the three cameras will be a periscope telephoto lens. This means that the Huawei P30 Pro could still be a better camera option—as far as zooming is concerned, at least.

The cutouts could house a dual LED flash as well as a laser emitter and receiver combo, which would be expected given the Huawei P30’s setup. It’s still likely that the P40 Pro will have a periscope camera, given the relative success of the P30 Pro.

However, much of the above is still speculation at this point. The only thing for certain is that P40 looks like it will come with a triple-camera setup, at the moment.

In any case, we shouldn’t have to wait for too long. Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, earlier said that the lineup was set to launch in March of 2020—although the CEO also spoke about the possibility of HarmonyOS at that point in time.

That still looks increasingly unlikely, and Huawei has reiterated that it plans to work with the Android ecosystem if permitted. For now, most of Huawei’s newly-released smartphones come with “HMS” (Huawei Mobile Services), in lieu of GMS (Google Mobile Services).
