Samsung Galaxy S10 successor might not be called the Galaxy S11

The current Galaxy S10 series marks the 10th generation of Samsung’s popular flagship smartphone lineup. For 2020, it appears that its successor may not be called the Samsung Galaxy S11 as the Korean smartphone maker could be doing something different to welcome the new decade.

Prolific leakster Ice Universe, has hinted that the next Samsung flagship would be revealed as the Samsung Galaxy S20. According to the following tweet, the new name is in conjunction with the new year and 2020 will mark a new beginning. This is somewhat a similar approach as Huawei and Honor where they have jumped 10 steps in its model naming. After launching the Huawei P10 and Honor 10, the Chinese smartphone maker had named the P20 and Honor 20 as their sequential successors.

It is also not surprising for Samsung to revamp its smartphone naming convention considering they have combined its Galaxy J and Galaxy A series last year with a double-digit naming scheme (e.g Galaxy A50, A70, A80). On top of that, they have also skipped a number for the Galaxy Note series a couple of years ago.

If the next Galaxy S series is indeed called the Galaxy S20, this would also mean that the next Note could be introduced as the Galaxy Note 20. The question is, what happens after that? Will it be the S21 or the S30?

When it comes to flagships, Apple is probably the only company that continues its smartphone naming beyond the number 10. After introducing the iPhone X and XS (X is pronounced as “ten”), their next model was the iPhone 11. This naming convention, however, is currently only limited to the iPhone. For the rest of their products such as the iPad, iPad Air, MacBook 15 and iMac, they do not carry any running number next to the official model name. The only way we can tell it apart is by the generation number or the year of the release which is something that’s not published on their marketing materials.

Going back to Samsung, what do you think the next Galaxy S should be called? Should they continue with the Galaxy S11 or should they reset the series with the Samsung Galaxy S20 to mark the year 2020? Let us know in the comments below.
