Oppo has announced the opening of its APAC Hub Centre in Malaysia during its APAC Strategy Launch event held in Kuala Lumpur. The Chinese brand which is popular for its selfie-centric smartphone aspires to be more than just a smartphone maker and they are expanding into the IoT and 5G solutions space.
Oppo’s first venture into the APAC market began in 2009 when they expanded into Thailand. A decade later, APAC is currently their largest regional market and according to GfK, Asia Pacific accounts for 50% of the global smartphone market in 2019. In terms of growth, Emerging APAC is expected to lead globally at 5% in 2020.
By having an APAC hub centre in Malaysia, Oppo explained that it can offer better support to local partners and customers. The location also allows them to stay closer to consumers and have better insights into local markets which will enable them to develop better products for the APAC region.
With the establishment of the hub in Kuala Lumpur, Oppo can develop localised strategies and manage different markets closely, for example, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia. They added that the location allows them to hire top talent and this puts them a step further to understand consumer needs.
During the event, Oppo has also kicked off its Oppo 5G Landing Project in APAC with a total of 15 carrier partners. This includes Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile from Malaysia. The 5G Landing Project aims to accelerate the commercialisation of 5G in the region. With the APAC Hub Centre, Oppo will work closely with upstream and downstream partners in the industrial chain to deliver cutting-edge 5G experiences.
Oppo has also showcased two new products which include the Enco Free true wireless headphones and its Oppo 5G CPE T1. The 5G CPE T1 is a wireless router that uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 modem. It is a dual-mode 5G modem that supports both NSA and SA networks with download speeds up to 5Gbps.
It can create a 2.4GHz and 5GHz hotspot at your home and it even supports the latest 802.11ax WiFi 6 standards with 2×2 MU MIMO. The router can also connect to the 5G network via eSIM and it is available in Brown and White.
