Adobe’s new app brings “real-time Photoshop-grade magic” to your phone

Social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat have been the go-to mobile app by many users due to their quirky filters, while other apps like Snapseed have been popular for their ease of use. However, it’s apparent that these apps aren’t replacing applications like Photoshop for more heavy editing, and it seems that the folks over at Adobe have noticed.

In case you missed it, they’ve also launched Photoshop for the iPad, and they’ve also announced a new smartphone app called Adobe Photoshop Camera. The app is built on Adobe’s Sensei AI platform, and will bring “Photoshop magic” directly to your smartphone’s viewfinder. The app will automatically recognise the subject in your photo, and apply “sophisticated, unique features at the moment of capture”.

“Leveraging Adobe Sensei intelligence, the app can instantly recognize the subject in your photo and provide recommendations, and automatically apply sophisticated, unique features at the moment of capture (i.e. portraits, landscapes, selfies, food shots), while always preserving an original shot. It also understands the technical content (i.e. dynamic range, tonality, scene-type, face regions) of the photo and automatically applies complex adjustments.”

Adobe Photoshop Camera also features a collection of lenses that are created by artists, including Billie Eilish, and users who sign up for the preview of the app will also have a chance to create lenses using Photoshop. From the video above, it appears that the lenses are similar to what you get on Snapchat or even Instagram, which makes sense given Adobe’s target audience for the app.

“Working with Billie – who believes creativity is at the center of everything she does – we created some really cool limited-edition lenses inspired by her songs and music videos. It’s so easy and simple – anyone can use them to express themselves through the app.”

Unfortunately, the app isn’t available to everyone just yet. You’ll have to sign up for the preview, with a public release set for 2020.
