Spotify for kids coming soon, including family-friendly stories and podcasts

Audio content, just like every other kind of content, can have certain aspects to it that may be unsuitable for kids below a certain age. That includes song lyrics or even podcasts that may contain content that may have political or cultural connotations that aren’t exactly family-friendly.

To address this, Spotify is introducing a family-friendly app called Spotify Kids, which will have family-oriented music and stories, and will be available for Premium Family subscribers. Essentially, Spotify wants to create a “playground of sound” for kids, acknowledging that the current Spotify platform isn’t really simple, easy, or fun for kids to use.

The Spotify Kids platform will be ad-free, with content curated by their editors. There will also be custom avatars, custom colour themes, along with visuals “bursting with colour”. Meanwhile, Spotify says that the content will be curated by editors from some pretty well-known names: Nickelodeon, Disney, Discovery Kids, and Universal Pictures, to name a few.

There will be a degree of parental control over the app as well, which explains the app being included as part of the Premium Family subscription. Parents will be able to customise the content suitable for their kids, which include stories, audiobooks, and eventually, podcasts.

Intended for kids aged 3 and above, the beta app is being launched in Ireland for now—Spotify Kids will be rolled out to global markets that have the Premium Family subscription “in the coming months”. Click here to find out more.
