The new, modular GoPro Hero 8 Black is here, complete with HyperSmooth 2.0

GoPro has just announced the latest iteration of their Hero series: the Go Pro Hero 8 Black. It comes at RM1,879, features a new modular setup that allows for accessories to be mounted, and has HyperSmooth 2.0 for all resolutions and frame rates. This is GoPro’s updated stabilisation software, which allows for 4K footage to be recorded at 60 fps with “dramatically improved stabilisation”.

The GoPro Hero 8 Black also comes with an integrated mount, so users won’t need a separate frame to attach the camera to a bracket. But one of the headliners of GoPro’s new action camera is the set of optional mods that you can use with the Hero 8 Black. You can opt to (separately purchase and) add on accessories such as a shotgun microphone, LED light, or a flip-up view-finder—these don’t come cheap, however.

The Media Mod, available at US$79.99 (about RM334) allows for a small shotgun-mic for directional audio, along with two cold shoe mounts for additional accessories along with Type-C, HDMI and 3.5mm external mic adapter ports. The Display Mod, available at US$79.99 (about RM334), has a folding 1.9-inch display that attaches to the top of the Media Mod—this should help with framing for vlogging shots. And the Light Mod, available at US$49.99 (about RM209) can be mounted to the Media Mod or the GoPro mount, and comes with a diffusor for softer lighting.

On the Hero 8 Black, there are now four virtual lenses to choose from: Narrow, distortion-free Linear, Wide, and SuperView. GoPro has also improved the audio capabilities of the action cam, with better wind suppression, and there’s voice control with fourteen commands supported.

TimeWarp 2.0 has been updated as well—it will now automatically adjust the speed of the footage based on data from the camera, and GoPro has added an option to tap the touchscreen mid-TimeWarp recording to slow down to real time and again to speed back up.

As expected, the GoPro Hero 8 Black can shoot in 4K60 and 1080p240, along with 8x slow-mo 1080p240 videos. There’s also support for RAW files for all photo modes, including time lapse and burst photos.

If you’re keen to pick one up, you can pre-order the GoPro Hero 8 Black at RM1,879 and receive a limited edition foldable travel backpack. Pre-orders begin from the 10th of October to the 20th of October 2019, at GoPro Concept Stores:

– GoPro Concept Store – Midvalley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur

– GoPro Concept Store – Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya

– GoPro Concept Store – Gurney Plaza, Penang

– GoPro Concept Store – The Mall, Midvalley Southkey, Johor Bahru

Unfortunately, we don’t know what the pricing for the mods will be like, although the Media Mod (US$79.99), Display Mod (US$79.99) and Light Mod (US$49.99) will be available for pre-order on GoPro.com in December 2019.
