Syed Saddiq summons Foodpanda riders to his house via Twitter

Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq has expressed his sympathy for the plight of Foodpanda riders. He said that the majority of riders under Foodpanda consists of youths that worked day and night.

The Minister has requested for a dialogue session with Foodpanda riders at his home tomorrow evening (1st October) at 9:30PM. In his video, he revealed his home address which is located at No. 4, Jalan SS1/41, Petaling Jaya. He is looking forward to hearing the voices of affected riders so that the issue can be raised during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

He also mentioned that the gig system has many benefits, but we must ensure there are comprehensive check and balance to defend workers’ rights.

Foodpanda riders especially those located outside the Klang Valley had expressed their frustration over the new payment scheme. The food delivery company had revised its rates with higher payments per order, however, the riders outside the Klang Valley will no longer be paid the normal RM4/hour rate.

According to Foodpanda, the new rates will ensure riders that want to work more to have high volumes of deliveries available to them and vice versa, however, riders feel that the new revision will reduce their overall income. Foodpanda currently has 12,000 riders throughout Malaysia.
