Huawei Watch GT 2 confirmed to have mic, always-on, and 2-week battery life

If you’ve kept up with the leaks, the successor to the Huawei Watch GT was set to come with some incremental upgrades, rather than anything utterly mind-blowing. But that’s not really a bad thing, per se, with Huawei’s first iteration having boasted a really good battery life, along with some really sharp design edges.

Launched alongside the Mate 30 Pro recently, Huawei has addressed some missing features with the Huawei Watch GT 2, which still runs on Lite OS—which means that the battery life is still pretty great, when you compare it to other smartwatches in the market today. There are 2 sizes now: a 46mm version that sports a 1.39-inch OLED with 454 x 454 resolution and 22mm strap (like the original Watch GT), and a new 42mm variant with a 1.2-inch OLED with 390 x 390 resolution and 20mm strap.

The Watch GT 2 is powered by Huawei’s new Kirin A1 chipset, which Huawei says improves battery life and integrates Bluetooth 5.1—although the battery predictions at 2 weeks is more or less the same as the original Watch GT.

Perhaps one of the features that users were calling for most with the Watch GT was the inclusion of a microphone and speaker on the smartwatch—which the 46mm Watch GT 2 now has. However, there hasn’t been an LTE-version of the watch announced yet, so you’ll have to stay within 150m of your smartphone to receive/make calls on the Watch GT 2.

As for battery predictions, Huawei says that the 46mm variant will last for up to 2 weeks (with HR monitor and call notifications on), along with weekly usage of up to 30 minutes of calls, 30 minutes of music playback, 90 minutes of exercise and with the sleep tracking function on. In the “classic mode”, the smaller 42mm Watch GT 2 has an expected battery life of up to 1 week. With GPS tracking on in “sports mode”, the 46mm version has a battery life of 30 hours, while the 42mm variant has 15 hours.

There’s also an always-on mode, if that’s something you’d like to have on your smartwatch. As for local pricing and availability, we don’t have concrete details yet, but the Watch GT 2 will begin shipping in select markets in October, with pricing for the 42mm series at €229, and €249 for the 46mm series.
