Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s 7680fps ultra-slow-mo is amazing

One of the key highlights of the new Huawei Mate 30 Pro is its new ultra-slow-motion video feature. Before this, the highest frame rate we’ve seen so far on a smartphone is the Xperia XZ2 that can shoot 960fps in 1080p resolution. Now Huawei is turning things up to eleven with an insane 7680fps slow-mo.

On the Mate 30 Pro, you now have several slow-mo options ranging from 4x (120fps), 32x (960fps), 64x (1920fps) and 256x (7680fps). Here’s a sample video of a steel ball landing onto a plate of coloured powder:

Lighting at the demo booth was pretty adequate but we find it impressive that there’s no light flickering in the footage. Interestingly, the device uses the ultra-wide 40MP camera by default to take the shot. To make it easier to trigger the slow-mo, you can use the automatic motion detection feature where it will start recording in ultra-slow-mo if an object gets into frame. A full clip generally lasts about 35 seconds.

Do note that the device can only record 7680fps in HD 720p resolution. If you prefer to capture at a higher 1080p resolution, you’ll have to switch to 32x (960fps) slow-mo mode.
