Selangor Govt closes 29 schools due to haze, many areas considered “unhealthy”

The Selangor Educational Department has closed 29 schools in the state today, after 5 schools in the state were closed yesterday due to haze. The closure covers 24 schools in Klang and 5 schools in Hulu Langat, with around 45,265 students affected. This comes after 409 schools in Sarawak were closed recently, with 157,479 students affected by the closure.

The severity of haze is measured using the Air Pollutant Index (API), with readings of 0 to 50 indicating good air quality; 51 to 100 as moderate; 101 to 200 as unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy; and 300 and above, hazardous. Once the API reading in a particular area goes over 200, schools are instructed to immediately close until the situation improves.

Yesterday, the Johan Setia station had API readings of over 200—”very unhealthy”—which resulted in the closure of 5 schools in the area yesterday. Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendamar in Klang, SK Bukit Naga in Shah Alam, SK Jalan Kebun, SK Kampung Johan Setia and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jalan Kebun were closed down as part of standard operating procedure.

At the time of writing, the API readings for the Petaling Jaya station is 141, Shah Alam at 136, Cheras at 146, while Johan Setia has a reading of 213. The API at the Klang station reads at 129, while Banting has an API reading of 126. As of now, the only station to have a “very unhealthy” reading is the Johan Setia station.
