Sony will be launching a new Xperia smartphone tomorrow in conjunction with IFA 2019. After revealing its Xperia 1 smartphone that has a cinematic 21:9 4K display, the Japanese smartphone maker is now expected to reveal a compact version.
According to its official IFA 2019 teaser, the new device will put Xperia excellence in the palm of your hand. This is looking like a proper successor to the Xperia XZ2 Compact.
Ahead of the launch, serial leakster Roland Quandt has revealed more details of the upcoming smartphone that could be called the Xperia 2. There’s a possibility that it could be given the name Xperia 1s or 1v or some other postfix to indicate that it’s a compact Xperia 1.
Instead of a 6.5″ 4K OLED display, the compact Xperia is said to come with a smaller 6.1″ screen that is likely to push a Full HD+ resolution of 2520×1080 pixels in 21:9 aspect ratio. According to Roland, it is likely that Sony will also offer an OLED panel with HDR support.
Powering the device is expected to be a flagship-class Snapdragon 855 processor mated to 6GB RAM along with 128GB of storage. Similar to the Xperia 1, it will come with a triple-camera array with 12MP sensors for all three. This will also include an ultra-wide-angle lens as well as a telephoto camera that can do 2X zoom.
If you look at the design, it looks exactly the same as the Xperia 1 except that its camera array is positioned to the top left side of the rear. There’s also no headphone jack and if you look at the right, you’ll find a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a power button, volume rocker and also a dedicated camera shutter button.
The event is taking place in Berlin at 13:00CET on 5th September. That’s 8.00PM Malaysian time. In case you missed it, Sony Malaysia is now accepting pre-orders for the Xperia 1 and they are bundling the WH-1000XM3 ANC headphones for free. Stocks are expected to arrive in October.
