Official Android 10 is rolling out for Redmi K20 Pro and Essential Phone

Android 10 has just been officially released for Pixel smartphones, and it turns out that some manufactures have also been pretty quick with rolling out OTA updates with Android 10. Expectedly, the Essential Phone is getting the update on day one, but there’s also been a surprising update from another major smartphone manufacturer.

Redmi, a subsidiary company of Xiaomi, is rolling out the official Android 10 update to the Redmi K20 Pro in China. This was confirmed in a post on Weibo by Xiaomi CEO and co-founder, Lei Jun—this is particularly impressive as the Redmi K20 Pro operates on MIUI, and other day one releases like the Essential Phone and Pixel devices are on stock Android.

According to this post, you can sideload the update files to your Redmi K20 Pro, with different update files available for China and India users. However, when we tried to update the Redmi K20 Pro (China set, but we’re situated in Malaysia), we got the following message: “ROM is in beta testing, makes sure you have signed in with a beta authorised Xiaomi account”.

We’re not sure if this is happening because we’re not located in China, but we’ll keep waiting for the official OTA update to be pushed to our K20 Pro. As for India users, GSMArena reports that they are having the same issue. The OS versions will be MIUI 10.4.4.0 in China and MIUI 10.4.7.0, and we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the update to be pushed to the global version—the Mi 9T Pro.

As for other brands, OnePlus is also pushing an Open Beta program for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro (Oxygen OS), although it must be noted that this is not the same thing as the stable update for the Essential Phone and Redmi K20 Pro. Despite the fact that Android 10 is only being pushed to Redmi K20 Pro smartphones, it’s safe to assume that the update should theoretically come to the Mi 9T Pro sometime soon as well.
