Here’s what you need to know about Huawei’s EMUI 10

Huawei’s well-documented troubles at the international level have dominated headlines in recent times, but it seems that the Chinese company is pressing ahead with Android-based plans in the meantime. They’ve just announced the official release of EMUI 10 that will be based on Android Q, which will be available the upcoming Mate series of smartphones.

In the meantime, EMUI 10 beta will be internally tested on the P30 series along with other supported models—this beta program has a start date of September 8 2019. Huawei promises, in a nutshell, 3 main things you can expect from EMUI 10: “a new UX design, an all-scenario ultimate experience, and a new standard of smooth operation”. Here’s a breakdown of the features:

Cross-device collaboration

EMUI 10 will feature multi-screen collaboration, which basically means that you can use supported Huawei smartphones and laptops together. This includes functionality that will allow accessories connected to your PC such as your mouse and keyboard to be used to control your smartphone, although 3rd party apps may be required. According to Huawei, users will also be able to utilise this shared screen function to drag-and-drop files.

In addition to that, it will also be possible to share the hardware capabilities of different devices, which means you can use your PC, or even smart speaker, to answer calls made to your smartphone. Huawei says that this is down to EMUI 10’s virtualisation of each device’s hardware to create a shared resource pool.

Huawei is also introducing the HiCar app with EMUI 10, which will allow you to pair your phone to your car’s infotainment system and control music, navigation, and even functions like AC in supported vehicles.

New UX design

Besides a new Always-On Display, the new UX will also feature an updated lock screen, as well as the much-awaited dark mode. Dark mode, according to Huawei, is for users’ visual comfort, while smartphones that use OLED displays can also save some battery life with the use of dark modes or themes. As EMUI 10 is built on Android Q, we can expect the Force Dark feature that lets the OS create a dark version of their existing theme on certain apps.

Dark Mode will include native applications such as email, contacts, clock, and photos. Huawei has also opened up the API for developers to add support of this feature in their applications.

Android Q features

EMUI 10 will feature most of Android Q’s features as well—this includes all-screen gestures, while a long-press on a notification will give users the option to set the app to “Interruptive” or “Gentle” notifications. There will also be the introduction of “Bubbles”, which will allow notifications to float above other apps—users can opt to expand or collapse these bubbles.

First coming to P30 smartphones, Mate 30 series to feature EMUI 10

EMUI 10 beta will be first internally tested with smartphones in the P30 series on September 8, with the beta to be made available to Mate 20 series smartphones soon after. Huawei says that the upcoming Mate 30 series will also feature EMUI 10, with the Mate 30 expected to be launched sometime in Q4 of this year.
