Nintendo tells customers: no free upgrades for Switch buyers

A number of reports surfaced a few days ago that indicated that Nintendo was offering free upgrades to customers who purchased the console after July 17 2019 (around the time that the update). This comes in light of news that Nintendo has upgraded the current Nintendo Switch with a new SoC, as well as significantly improved battery life.

However, it now appears that the reports were false. Nintendo explained that there is no exchange program:

“We do not have a Nintendo Switch exchange program. We always want players to enjoy their Nintendo Switch systems, and if anything ever gets in the way of that, we encourage them to visit http://support.nintendo.com for support, or to contact our consumer support team.”

In case you haven’t caught up yet, the updated Nintendo Switch will look identical to its predecessor, and isn’t technically a new model. You get 4.5–9 hours of battery life, which is a marked improvement over the 2.5–6.5 hours of usual battery life on the past Switch. A new Nvidia Tegra X1 processor powering the console should also translate to a better overall performance—especially for demanding games such as Breath of the Wild.

Some retailers in Malaysia have been advertising the updated model as the “new” Switch, but if you want to be sure, make sure that the device’s serial number begins with XKW, you’ll be getting the fresh model.
