Xiaomi Mi 9 with a faster Snapdragon 855+ processor appears to be in the works

It looks like Xiaomi is updating its Mi 9 flagship lineup with an upgraded variant that offers a faster processor and support for 5G. A new device had passed China’s TENAA certification database which reveals a couple of interesting details.

The device is expected to be marketed as the Xiaomi Mi 9S and it is said to be introduced as a 5G device for China Unicom. In terms of design, it looks similar to the current Xiaomi Mi 9 and it still retains a 6.39″ Full HD+ AMOLED display.

The device is listed with a larger 4,000mAh battery, which is about 21% more than the current Mi 9. Overall, the device is thicker at 8.95mm and it’s also heavier at 196 grams. Connectivity-wise, it also supports 5G NSA standards in Band 41, 78 and 79.

Another interesting surprise is that the processor is clocked at 2.96GHz, which is a strong indication that it’s a Snapdragon 855+ unit. As a comparison, the standard Snapdragon 855 unit is clocked at 2.84GHz. According to Qualcomm, the higher-clocked processor offers 15% faster graphics rendering and an uplift in CPU performance over the current standard Snapdragon 855.

The Xiaomi Mi 9S is also listed with RAM configuration of up to 12GB and storage options of up to 512GB. So far there are no further details yet but we reckon this device will be released only in 5G markets similar to the Mi MIX 3 5G.

If you’re looking for a Snapdragon 855+ powered smartphone, it is now available on the ROG Phone II and Black Shark 2 Pro.
