Coocaa 50″ 4K TV unboxing: One of the cheapest Android TVs around

Coocaa‘s TVs have certainly made an impression in the South East Asian region, with the brand having been launched in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam in 2018. They’ve been given the accolade of being the number 1 best-selling home appliance brand in Lazada SEA in their first 8 months, while they’re also the number 1 TV brand on Lazada in Indonesia. They consider themselves to be a pure e-commerce brand, so you can pick one up on their official store on Lazada.

Having recently launched in Malaysia, we got our hands on the Coocaa 50Q5: a 50″, 4K, Android TV that goes at a relatively low price of RM1,799. If you’d like to watch me unbox the TV, as well as find out my first impressions of the TV, have a look below:

Android TV

The model I unboxed came equipped with the official Android TV OS, which is based on Android 8.0. This means that there is official access to Google Play Store, along with pre-installed Netflix and YouTube apps. Titles are indeed playable in 4K, with Android TVs all certified by Netflix and receiving Widevine L1 certification.

In addition to that, there’s also support for Google Assistant, which allows you to perform tasks via voice control. This is especially useful for TVs, as using a remote to do certain tasks such as searching YouTube can be difficult. The remote can work via infrared or Bluetooth, although I had some initial trouble connecting the remote to the TV via Bluetooth.

After Googling for Skyworth TVs (the parent company of Coocaa), I discovered that to put the remote into Bluetooth pairing mode, you have to hold the left button on the d-pad, while holding the home button. This info, unfortunately, isn’t readily available in the manual of quick setup guide, which is somewhat disappointing.

Once connected via Bluetooth, you can use the mic button on the remote for Google Assistant, or you can also opt to download the Android TV remote app on your iOS or Android smartphone, and control the TV with your smartphone.

The Coocaa TV also comes with 3 HDMI ports (one HDMI 1.4, two HDMI 2.0), as well as two USB ports—one USB 3.0 port, and one USB 2.0 port. You also have the option to hook the TV up to a digital tuner, while the TV supports Bluetooth 4.0.

The TV can be mounted onto the wall via a VESA mount, and it has a pretty large footprint at 91.8mm (for its thickest section). From early impressions, the Mediatek MT5596 Quad Core 1.2G powering the TV translates to a reasonably fast performance.
