Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Redmi, is expected to announce a new smartphone that will utilise Samsung’s 64MP GW1 ISOCELL image sensor. Today, not only have they revealed what this new 64MP camera has to offer, but they have also teased a brand new Samsung 108MP camera that’s coming very soon.
Samsung hasn’t even revealed the name of the new ultra-high resolution sensor but it’s definitely an ISOCELL unit. According to Xiaomi, the 108MP ultra-clear camera is capable of capturing an image with an epic 12,032 x9,024 pixels resolution.
Serial leakster @UniverseeIce had indicated on Twitter that this epic camera could be featured on the Mi MIX 4. The current Mi MIX 3 that has a sliding mechanism and a Snapdragon 845 processor was released in October last year. Looking at the timing, it looks like a MIX replacement is certainly due.
Going back to the new Redmi device that’s expected to be released within this month, the Samsung 64MP sensor will come with a 1/1.7″ sensor size which is bigger than the current popular Sony IMX586 48MP sensor that has a 1/2.0″ size. According to Xiaomi, the 64MP sensor is 34% larger than the 48MP unit.
They added that the high-resolution image is even suitable for large format printing up to a height of 3.26 metres. By default, the sensor has a pixel size of 0.8-micron but with its Tetracell technology, it has a 4-in-1 pixel binning that increases the effective pixel size to 1.6-micron. However, this also means that the final image will be a lower 16MP.
Unfortunately, Xiaomi hasn’t revealed any launch dates yet but Realme will be the first to feature the 64MP camera on their latest smartphone. Their upcoming device will be announced tomorrow and it has a quad-camera setup. Looking at the twitter display name of Realme India’s CEO, the device is speculated to be called the Realme 5.
