Singaporean-based online marketplace, Carousell, kicked off a new social campaign as part of a nationwide social effort today. #MYLocalWira will run from today until the 31st of August, and is part of Carousell’s Merdeka celebrations.
Local celebrities such as Datuk Nicol David and Amber Chia will contribute personal items to be sold on Carousell, with proceeds then going to Parents without Partners, a charitable organisation that helps single parents in need. The organisation usually raises funds by thrifting preloved items at Jumble Station on Carousell, with funds raised to support expenses like rent, groceries, and school supplies.
Other notable Malaysians taking part include Malaysia’s first female ONE Championship MMA fighter, Ann Osman, Malaysia’s “Drift Queen” Leona Chin, as well as national athletes Leong Mun Yee and Farah Ann.
According to Mr. Tang Siew Wai, Country Head of Carousell Malaysia:
“Many Malaysians are blessed with more than we need, while others need a helping hand. With the #MyLocalWira campaign, we are working with prominent individuals to sell their preloved items on Carousell in a generous act of ‘giving back’ to the Malaysian public who have supported them for years.”
Tang also said that he expects Malaysian fans to find it “meaningful” to have a personal item from one of the notable figures that are taking part in this campaign, with the hope that the involvement by these personalities will inspire others to do great things.
You can view a full list of the Malaysian personalities and their items for sale on Carousell’s website or the Carousell app. For more info, you can visit Carousell’s Facebook page or their Instagram page.
