LG announces 5K display, designed for Macs and iPad Pros

LG has just announced two new displays that are specifically designed for Apple devices—the 27″ UltraFine 5K Display and the smaller 24″ UltraFine 4K Display. Both monitors will work with Mac computers as well as the 2018 iPad Pro, thanks to support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C.

The larger 5K display is basically an incremental update of an earlier model (from 2016)—one that Apple endorsed as the best monitor to pair with the MacBook Pro. The updated model now boasts power delivery of up to 94W, which means that the display can charge USB-C devices such as the iPad Pro.

LG says that the display is ideal for professionals in the creative industry, with the 27″ display containing over 14.7 million pixels with 218 pixels per inch (PPI). With regards to its compatibility with Macs, users will be able to control volume and brightness of the display from their Mac native keyboard, and LG has added an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts screen brightness when you connect it to your Mac. According to The Verge, the 27″ Ultrafine 5K Display also supports Apple’s True Tone technology that adjusts the display based on the ambient light conditions of your environment.

However, it’s worth noting that the display won’t push 5K resolution for all of Apple’s devices. According to Apple’s support page, certain models such as the MacBook and the iPad Pro 2018 will only result in 4K, as opposed to the full 5120 x 2880 resolution that you’d get with other Apple devices.

Along with that, LG also announced a 24″ UltraFine 4K display, with similar compatibility with Macs—the Thunderbolt 3 ports can be used to daisy chain two 4K displays, which will come in handy for those in the creative industry as well. It’s worth noting that LG’s UltraFine displays don’t have physical buttons, which make them less-than-ideal for Windows PCs.

You’ll be able to get either of the monitors from Apple’s website, although it doesn’t appear to be available yet on the Malaysians site right now. The 27″ UltraFine 5K Display retails for US$1,299.95 (about RM5,381), while the 24″ UltraFine 4K Display is priced at US$699.95 (about RM2,897).
