Google has dropped another teaser for its upcoming Pixel 4 smartphone and this time, it’s all about motion sensing. Although it doesn’t come with a notch, the Pixel 4 will feature an extensive array of sensors on the front of the device. This isn’t just used for facial recognition but it can enable more possibilities with “ambient computing.”
As seen in the video above, the Pixel 4 will feature a Face unlock feature that unlocks the device in a single motion. Unlike the iPhone X’s FaceID feature, there’s no additional swipe up step required and Google claims that you can unlock using your face in any direction, even upside down. This feature can be used to authenticate payments as well as applications.
On top of that, the device also supports hand gestures which are somewhat similar to the LG G8 ThinQ but it is more sophisticated than that. It uses Project Soli which is radar-based motion-sensing technology developed by Google’s Advanced Technology Projects Team (ATAP).
At the top of the Pixel 4, there’s a very small Soli radar chip that can detect touchless gesture interactions at high speed with great accuracy. According to Google, you will be able to skip songs, snooze alarms and silence phone calls by simply waving your hand in front of your device.
Apart from having a single front camera for selfies on the smaller Pixel 4, the flagship device will come with not one but two face unlock IR cameras which are accompanied by a dot projector and flood illuminator.
Since the Google Pixel 4 has a clean design for the rear without a physical fingerprint sensor, it appears that Face Unlock could be the primary option to secure the device. We haven’t seen the display yet so there’s a chance that the Pixel 4 may come with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
