Huawei Mate 30 Pro to come with two 40MP cameras?

The Huawei Mate 30 series is expected to be announced at the end of this year after Samsung and Apple release their flagship devices. The current Huawei P30 Pro boasts a super zoom capability with its periscope telephoto module. For the upcoming Mate 30 Pro, it appears that Huawei could be making further advancements in the ultra-wide-angle camera department.

Reliable leakster Ice Universe had tweeted that a new device will come with a 40MP + 40MP + 8MP + ToF setup. He didn’t name the quad-camera device but looking at the configuration, this is likely to be the next Huawei flagship.

At the moment, the P30 Pro uses a quad-camera setup that consists of a 40MP f/1.6 main camera, a 20MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens, an 8MP f/3.4 telephoto camera that is capable of 10X hybrid zoom. The device also comes with a 3D ToF camera that’s used for bokeh effects.

Going back to the tweet by Ice Universe, the secondary 40MP camera could be utilised for ultra-wide-angle and this could mean better detail when capturing landscapes. The main 40MP sensor, 8MP periscope telephoto camera and ToF camera is likely to be the same as the current P30 Pro.

If we look at the past flagship models from Huawei, the recent P series has always been about zoom (P20 Pro: 3x Optical, 5x Hybrid, P30 Pro: 5x Optical, 10X Hybrid). Meanwhile, the Mate 20 series was the first to introduce the ultra-wide-angle lens on their flagship models and it replaces the monochrome sensor.

Apart from having upgraded cameras, the new Mate will also introduce a brand new flagship Kirin processor. It is rumoured that the next processor will be the Kirin 985 and there could be a Kirin 990 that comes with an integrated 5G modem.

In terms of design, it appears that the Mate 30 Pro will still come with a huge notch like the current Mate 20 Pro series. We’ve seen a couple of photos showing the purported front glass panels that come with an array of sensors at the top. Ice Universe has just shared a couple more images that support this design.
