In an attempt to reach out to more users in price-sensitive markets, Netflix has officially announced a new mobile-only plan for India. The monthly subscription fee is 199 INR (about RM11.90/month), which is 60% lower than the current Basic plan.
The mobile-only Netflix plan does come with a couple of limitations. You can only watch your Netflix content via smartphone and tablet, and you can’t view it on a bigger screen via Chromecast. Similar to the Basic plan, you can only watch one stream and it’s limited to standard definition.
According to Netflix, their users in India watch more content on their mobiles compared to other users anywhere in the world. With the new plan, Netflix will be more accessible and better suited for people that like that watch on their smartphones and tablets. Based on a FICCI-EY 2019 report, Indians spend 30% of their phone time and 70% of their mobile data on entertainment.
Netflix has been testing out its mobile-only plans in several markets. In Malaysia, they had offered a mobile-only plan for RM17/month for a limited time last year. At the moment, the mobile-only plan is currently not available and it isn’t clear if they will roll it out officially in Malaysia.
