MCMC: Sharing of viral video of student being bullied is an offence

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is aware that a video recording of a group of students bullying a student is being spread online. The public is urged not to incite racial sentiments and also not to share the video which is currently viral on social sites.

Instead of sharing the video, the public is urged to report the video to the relevant authorities for further investigation. MCMC is currently working closely with social media platform providers to remove the video recording.

If you do see the video, you can help out by reporting the content for removal. This is available on most social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

According to the MCMC, sharing of offensive and menacing content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a jail term of not more than one year or both. The commission would also like to remind the public to be more responsible in sharing or commenting on any information in the form of video, photo or text on social media.

It also added that sharing or commenting on unverified content will not only cause public confusion but can lead to unnecessary unrest in our multiracial country.
