Huami’s new Amazfit GTR promises 74 days of battery life for a budget price

Smartwatches seem to go in and out of fashion with the passing of each season, it seems. But with the uprising of the fitness band, along with improved battery life and functionality for smartwatches and wearables in general, we’re treated to new, interesting devices that we can wear on our wrists everyday.

Huami, a close partner with Xiaomi, has recently released the latest in their line of Amazfit smartwatches—the Amazfit GTR. After releasing the Amazfit Verge 2 earlier in June, the new GTR (what a name) has a focus on the budget segment, with fitness tracking a key element of the wearable.

The GTR will be available in 2 sizes—42mm and 47mm—and will feature an AMOLED display. If you’re feeling a-vengeful, you can also opt for the Iron Man Limited Edition version, that will come in a 47mm gold coloured case and a red silicone strap.

What stands out about Huami’s new smartwatch is, of course, the battery life. In basic watch mode, you’re looking at more than 2-month’s worth of usage (74 days) for the larger 47mm version, while you get over a month’s usage on the 42mm version. While some were hoping for the GTR to have Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor, there doesn’t appear to be any info on the SoC for now. In addition to that, the GTR’s operating system will be Amazfit’s proprietary OS.

Features

First things first, you won’t be able to answer calls on the Amazfit GTR, thanks to the lack of a microphone or even a loudspeaker. However, it is decently decked out with other relevant features. This includes built-in GPS/GLONASS, NFC for payments overseas, an optical heart rate monitor, as well as 5ATM rated water resistance for the wearable.

As for its display, the 42mm variant will feature a 390 x 390 1.2″ AMOLED display, while the larger 42mm version will have a 454 x 454 1.39″ AMOLED display. This should mean that users should have no problems with visibility, even in bright settings.

The 42mm Amazfit GTR will be available from a starting price of RMB 800 (about RM478), with options of 20mm silicone straps in black, pink or white. For the 47mm variant, you’ll have a choice of a aluminium or stainless steel (with a 22mm brown leather strap), which will have a starting price of RMB 1000 (about RM598). As for the Limited Edition Iron Man variant, pricing will be announced in the future.
