Would the Huawei Mate 30 Pro still come with a notch?

We’re on the cusp of the second wave of mainstream flagship smartphone launches, and–as if right on cue–the leaks have begun to stream in. Today, it looks like it’s the Huawei Mate 30 Pro‘s turn as a new image of what is allegedly the display of the upcoming flagship smartphone.

The only part that made me raise an eyebrow was the fact that it still has a notch.

I mean, sure, you could argue that there’s nothing wrong with it, but to me the notch feels decidedly dated in the current climate of punch-holes, motorised pop-up cameras and even sliding displays. Huawei themselves have always been quite willing to push the envelope when it comes to innovative ideas–for better, or worse–and that’s evident when you look at something like the Mate X.

So, to see that they’re still going for a notched design, especially since their Nova and even sub-brand Honor smartphones have already debuted with good-looking punch-hole screens. But, I guess this is a matter of taste, more than anything else and many of you may not have a problem with the notch at all.

That being said, if these leaks are true, it doesn’t look like the notch is there for nothing. The front panel appears to have six different cutouts that are not dissimilar to what we saw on the Mate 20 Pro. This is good news because that phone doesn’t use some regular old Face Unlock, it actually has the capability to recognise your face in 3D thanks to the 3D Depth Sensing Camera. This should then translate to more secure facial recognition.

But, a lot of this is still early speculation–as is everything we’ve seen thus far. The rumour mill seems to indicate that the Mate 30 Pro will pack a 6.71″ QHD+ OLED display, a brand new Kirin 985 flagship processor and possibly a Balong 5000 modem for 5G capabilities, alongside a 4,200 mAh battery with an insane 55W fast-charging standard. Reverse wireless charging is likely to make a return too.
