Samsung’s new Galaxy tablet supports LTE for less than RM600

Samsung Malaysia has just released a smaller, more affordable Galaxy Tab A 8.0 that retails for only RM599. Despite its low price, the Tab A also supports LTE, so you won’t have to rely on Wi-Fi accessibility, while its 8.0″ display has a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels—around 188.68 PPI.

The tablet is being marketed as an affordable, “all-in-one” device that comes with Samsung’s One UI, which will allow for a two-column layout for multi-tasking, as well as a “Kid’s Home” feature that offers parents the ability to set play-time limits as well as content restrictions.

This version of the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 will come with 2GBs of RAM and 32 GBs of storage, so don’t expect a powerhouse here. That said, we don’t know what processor the table will be using, since Samsung only reveals its processor as “Qualcomm (QUAD 2.0 GHz)”.

Based on that info and a quick check on Qualcomm’s official product site, it appears that the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 is utilising the Snapdragon 429—although this isn’t mentioned on Samsung’s official spec list.

But you’ll get a decent enough 5,100mAh battery, along with a microSD slot that supports up to 512GB of expandable storage. The tablet also comes with Android P out of the box, and will feature an 8MP main shooter, and a 2MP front-facing camera for selfies. It’s with great relief that we can also confirm that the Tab A will feature a headphone jack, so there’s no need to spend another couple of hundred Ringgits on a set of wireless earphones.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 will be available in metallic black and silver, and while its specs don’t blow you away, it does fulfil a need in the tablet market for more affordable devices. I haven’t had a chance to get my hands on a unit yet, so I’ll reserve further comment on the feel and sound of the device’s dual-speaker setup for now.
