The chief designer responsible for the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad design is leaving Apple

Sir Jony Ive, the chief design officer at Apple will be leaving the company by end of this year. During his tenure of nearly 30 years, Jony Ive was responsible for some of the most iconic technology products which include the very first iMac in 1998. He was even named the most influential person on British culture in 2004, beating Harry Potter author JK Rowling.

According to Apple’s announcement, Jony is forming his own independent design company and Apple will be one of his key clients. Although he’s no longer an employee, he will still work closely with Apple on a range of products while he’s free to pursue his own personal projects.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook says “Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple’s revival cannot be overstated, from 1998’s groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care.” He also added ” Apple will continue to benefit from Jony’s talents by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate design team he has built. After so many years working closely together, I’m happy that our relationship continues to evolve and I look forward to working with Jony long into the future. “

Apple’s design team lead by Evans Hankey, the Vice President of Industry design and Alan Dye, the Vice President of Human Interface Design will report to Jeff Williams, the COO at Apple. According to Jony Ive, he’s proud of the lasting work they have done to create a design team, process and culture at Apple that is without peer. He’s confident that the design team will thrive under the leadership of Evans, Alan and Jeff.
