Oppo will showcase a new selfie camera technology that’s hidden under the display

Oppo will be showcasing a smartphone at MWC Shanghai 2019 that offers a different way to solve the selfie-camera conundrum. Instead of using pop-up selfie cameras or a punch-hole display, it will feature an under-display camera that’s non-visible when the screen is in use.

The technology was teased via Twitter earlier this month. As shown above, the selfie camera is mounted on the top of the screen where a dewdrop notch is usually located. When you need to take a selfie, the entire top of the screen will turn to black, allowing the hidden camera to see through.

It isn’t clear if Oppo will be announcing an actual commercial product but we are guessing that it will be a prototype device that showcases this new under-display camera technology. This is similar to the 10X Zoom concept which we saw in MWC Barcelona and the device was eventually released as the Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition.

The Oppo event at MWC Shanghai 2019 is taking place on 26th June at 2PM. Apart from Oppo, Xiaomi had also shown off a similar under-display technology and it does look better than having a punch-hole on the screen. What do you think of this under-display camera technology? Let us know in the comments below.
