Redmi reveals the name of its Snapdragon 855-powered flagship killer

Redmi which is now an independent sub-brand under Xiaomi is about to release its first ever flagship smartphone. After the OnePlus 7 Pro was announced, the affordable smartphone brand had posted a congratulatory tweet to the once “flagship killer”. If you look closely, the tweet also dropped a hint of its upcoming device which will be called the Redmi K20.

The new flagship device will be running on a top of the line Snapdragon 855 processor and Redmi even imply that it will be a “Flagship Killer 2.0”. On Redmi’s General Manager, Lu Wei Bing’s Weibo account, he has also confirmed that the new smartphone will be called the Redmi K20. It isn’t clear why Redmi is using the number 20. It could be something to do with the year 2020 or perhaps they are trying to compete directly with its rival, the Honor 20 series.

A couple of weeks back, Redmi had released a teaser in conjunction with Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame movie. Towards the end, it showed a new smartphone that comes with a pop-up selfie camera.

It was speculated that this new flagship will feature a 6.39″ Full HD+ display and it will come with a triple-camera setup consisting of a 48MP + 8MP + 13MP combo. If this is true, Xiaomi might be replicating Huawei’s Honor sub-brand approach by releasing a similar device under a different brand with a much lower price tag.

At the moment, the Xiaomi brand has two Snapdragon 855 devices with the Mi 9 and the Mi MIX 3 5G. If the Redmi K20 offers a flagship processor at an affordable price point, is there still room for yet another Pocophone? Or perhaps this new device could be released as a Pocophone product in different markets.
