HONOR 20 Pro: HONOR’s first quad-camera phone is expected to rank top three in DxOMark

Some information contained in this article is provided by HONOR.

Scheduled to be announced on 21 April, the HONOR 20 series will be the next line of flagship smartphones from HONOR and if the information that we’ve seen is anything to go by, the HONOR 20 and HONOR 20 Pro look set to be formidable devices especially in the camera department.

HONOR’s first ever quad camera smartphone

It’s no secret that HONOR and Huawei are related to one another. While the relationship is best described as complicated, it is clear that HONOR benefits greatly from the technology developed by Huawei and the camera is one key e where the HONOR 20 will stand out from its competitors.

You can expect the HONOR 20 Pro to feature a virtually identical camera setup to its closely related cousin, the Huawei P30 Pro this means a quad-camera including the periscope camera system that makes the phenomenal 50x zoom possible.

The quad-camera arrangement could look like this: a 48MP f/1.4 main camera utilising Sony’s amazing IMX586 image sensor that’s also used in the View 20, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto and a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera. The fourth camera could a Time of Flight (ToF) – a version of which was first seen on the HONOR View 20 – or perhaps a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera, as some leaks suggests.

If the leaks are correct, the HONOR P20 series may have the largest aperture ever in a smartphone camera.

As we all know, aperture is the opening inside the lens in which light travels. The larger the aperture, the more light can enter the lens, the more light coming into the lens, the better the picture especially in low-light conditions. It will be interesting to see what this large aperture lens on the HONOR 20 series is capable of, especially in low light conditions.

Top three on DxOMark

By the looks of it the HONOR 20 Pro will feature the best camera array HONOR has ever introduced in its smartphone. This is partly because of the pedigree, as mentioned before HONOR and Huawei are related, and Huawei has some of the best cameras in a smartphone at the moment, just look at the P30 Pro.

With a combined score of 112 on DxOMark, the Huawei P30 Pro currently ranks on the top of the list when it comes to mobile camera performance. The Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro are listed in the top five best cameras on the same DxOMark list. The HONOR 20 Pro is expected to rank in amongst the top three on the DxOMark list. This makes the HONOR 20 Pro HONOR’s best performing camera ever.

Launching soon

The HONOR 20 series launch is happening on 21st May 2019 in London. Since Malaysia is a key market, we expect HONOR Malaysia to offer pre-orders almost immediately after the global event and it could go on sale before the Hari Raya holidays.

According to several rumours on Weibo, the HONOR 20 will feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with a water drop notch that houses a 32MP front selfie camera. It runs on a top of the line Kirin 980 processor with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. It is also likely to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor as well.  It is also speculated that the HONOR 20 will featured a 3,650mAh battery that supports 22.5W SuperCharge via USB-C

Apart from the HONOR 20 Pro, there will be a cheaper HONOR 20 non-Pro version. If you’re on a budget, the HONOR 20 Lite with a triple-camera setup has already launched in Malaysia last month with a retail price tag of RM949.
