Looks like GoPro will be facing a direct competitor very soon as DJI is about to introduce their first-ever action camera. As pictured above, the upcoming DJI product will be called the Osmo Action and it appears to come with two colour displays.
The retail box has already leaked and there are several renders that give us a clearer look of the action camera.
The Osmo Action shares a similar form factor as the GoPro Hero7 Black. The front display is larger than what you usually get on a GoPro and it would allow users to frame their shots for selfie and vlogging.
There’s a huge chunky ring around the main camera which we’re guessing could be used to mount additional lens adapters and accessories. Alternatively, this could possibly be a rotating bezel that can be used for menu navigation or manual focus. The Osmo Action is said to be waterproof without a case which is similar to the latest GoPro cameras.
It is speculated that the DJI Osmo Action will feature a 12MP Sony IMX337 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor that offers a 145-degree field of view and an f/2.8 aperture. The camera is said to be utilising a 14nm based Ambarella H2 image processor, which is the same as the one you’ll find on the Yi 4K+ action camera.
In case you didn’t know, GoPro previously used Ambarella SoCs on their action cameras until they introduced their own custom GoPro GP1 chip starting from the GoPro Hero6.
The Osmo Action is said to be capable of shooting 4K60p videos with up to 8x slow-mo. It also supports HDR, automatic time-lapse and has a shutter speed of 1/8000 to 120s. On top of that, the action camera is purported to come with a variety of shooting modes such as Single, AEB continuous shooting, countdown shooting, multiple continuous shooting and interval shooting.
Looking at the bottom, it appears there’s a small hatch which indicates that the battery is removable. We also don’t see any tripod mount, so you’ll probably need to buy a separate set of accessories from DJI.
The Osmo Action is expected to be revealed on 15th May 2019. DJI has already started a countdown timer on their website that says “Unleash your other side.” So far there’s no info on its stabilisation and we are curious to see if DJI would introduce a new gimbal for this new action camera.
