The OnePlus 7 series will be the first smartphone you can buy with blazing fast UFS 3.0 storage

OnePlus has always been shouting about speed. For the upcoming OnePlus 7 series, the smartphone maker is boasting fast and smooth display performance with a purported 90Hz refresh rate. Apart from having a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855 processor, the upcoming flagship is expected to push greater performance with a new storage technology that was first announced with the Galaxy Fold.

As confirmed by Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, the upcoming OnePlus 7 Pro will feature UFS 3.0 storage. This will deliver even faster and smoother performance compared to other current flagship smartphones in the market. It isn’t mentioned which UFS 3.0 solution OnePlus will be using but recently Samsung had introduced its 128GB and 512GB eUFS 3.0 solution.

According to Samsung, UFS 3.0 has a 2100MB/s sequential read speed which is 2.1X faster than their own 1TB eUFS 2.1 solution (1000MB/s) that’s found on the top of the line Galaxy S10+. Even sequential write speed is almost double at 410MB/s.

To put things in perspective, Samsung says that UFS 3.0 is four times faster than a SATA SSD and 20 times faster than a typical microSD card. On paper, you can transfer a Full HD movie to a PC in about 3 seconds. A 1TB version of the storage is expected to release later this year.

While most people scrutinise a smartphone based on the processor and amount of RAM on the spec-sheet, the type of internal storage plays an important role as well. As mentioned by XDA Developer, the faster storage performance will translate to faster app launch times and faster resource fetching for games, which translates to shorter loading times. This also means that the OnePlus 7 series can load documents and save images faster.

When you combine OnePlus’ high-performance hardware with OnePlus’ snappy OxygenOS, the OnePlus 7 Pro can potentially set a new performance benchmark when it hits the market. The OnePlus 7 series is launching on 14th May 2019.
