The triple-camera LG G8 ThinQ scores one point below the iPhone X on DxOMark Mobile

The LG G8 ThinQ is among the first Snapdragon 855-powered flagship smartphones to be announced at MWC19. Apart from having a unique “Air Motion” feature, the LG G8 ThinQ also features a triple-camera setup. If you’re wondering how’s the camera performance, the folks at DxOMark has just published its camera review of the LG flagship.

To recap on the specs, the LG G8 ThinQ with a triple-camera setup comes with a 12MP f/1.5 main camera with OIS that offers a 1.4-micron pixel size. The device also gets a 16MP f/1.9 ultra-wide-angle lens and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto shooter that is also assisted by OIS. Depending on the region, the G8 ThinQ is also available with a dual-camera setup.

Overall, the LG G8 ThinQ had scored 96 points which put it right below the iPhone X, Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S that scored 97 points. It’s two points higher than the LG V40 ThinQ and 13 points higher than the G7 ThinQ.

If you look at the breakdown, it manages to get 99 points for photos and 89 points for video. According to the review, the G8 ThinQ is a competent device that does things reasonably well without really excelling or failing dramatically in any area. For photos, it has accurate exposure and it offers pleasant colour rendering with great detail reproduction.

Unfortunately, it falls short in dynamic range and DxoMark reported colour shading and poor white balance when the flash is mixed with tungsten lighting. They also added that there’s noise and ringing while zooming in and it has an inconsistent bokeh effect.

For shooting videos, they found the G8 ThinQ to offer effective stabilisation with fast focus reaction. They also added that the camera offered good exposure and pleasant colours in most conditions but it struggles to focus in low light. According to their review, there’s also a visible jello effect for video recording.
