The Energizer smartphone with an 18,000mAh battery was an epic fail on Indiegogo

Remember that Energizer phone with an 18,000mAh battery? The mammoth device was recently placed on Indiegogo for crowdfunding but it only secured just US$15,005, which is just 1% of its targeted goal at the end of the funding period.

When the device was previewed at MWC 2019, it was one of the most talked about phones on the show floor. After getting a lot of attention from tech media around the world, Avenir Telecom, the company that has the license to produce Energizer smartphones, had placed the Energizer P18K Pop on Indiegogo with a US$1,200,000 goal.

For early bird backers, the first 200 units were going for US$549 (about RM2,270), while the subsequent phones were going for US$599 (about RM2,477). There’s even the option to buy a pack of three at a total cost of US$1,587 (about RM6,564).

In terms of specs, this Energizer smartphone comes with a 6.2″ Full HD display that stretches edge to edge and it runs on a MediaTek Helio P70 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage. Because of its notchless screen, the device comes with a pop-up selfie camera module that has not one but two cameras with 12MP + 2MP sensors. At the rear, it even comes with a triple camera setup with a 16MP + 5MP + 2MP configuration.

With an 18,000mAh battery, this phone is rated to last two full days of video playback. Of course, you can also use the phone to charge other smartphones with OTG charging via USB-C.

There are people who might find it useful to have a phone with a huge battery but to set a goal of US$1.2 million is just too unrealistic. As mentioned by The Verge, this could have been a marketing stunt to get grab headlines during the week-long MWC period.

Would you even consider using a phone like this as your daily driver? If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Rory’s hands-on with the Energizer P18K Pop below:
