Craving the absolute best is an innate instinct that we just can’t shake off – wanting the best food, clothes, accessories and gadgets are just a part of our desires. Among those items, smartphones are also a part of the list. The best smartphones – also known as flagships – offer the best specifications and features that a user would want from a smartphone.
As attractive as that may sound, these wonder devices often come with a hefty price – you may have to fork out around RM3,000 or more. Expensive, right?
What if I told you that you could get your hands on a brand-new flagship smartphone for just a fraction of that price. Yes really. It’s called the HONOR View20, and it’s about as flagship as they come.
The HONOR View20 went on sale in Malaysia on 26th January this year as the first flagship smartphone of 2019 from Honor. Sold at an affordable price of just under RM2,000, the new flagship has set a new bar for flagship smartphones through the principles of both affordability and performance.
Here are some of the highlights.
The HONOR View20 offers an impressive 48MP rear AI camera along with the Kirin 980 chipset. It is also world’s first 48MP rear camera that comes with AI Ultra Clarity. The Sony IMX586 48MP sensor combined with its AI features, enhances photo quality, especially when shooting at night.
The Kirin 980 chipset comes with a dual-ISP (Image Signal Processor) that collects details from each of the processors to combine them into a 48MP picture. From there, the chipset’s dual-NPU (Neural Processing Unit) feature begins the AI learning process, analysing picture quality and optimizing the photos to produce more vivid colours and sharper images.
The dual-camera setup comes with a secondary Time of Flight (ToF) camera. The ToF 3D camera is a range imaging camera system that emits and receives infrared light to measure the distance between the camera and the subject. In short, the camera projects infrared light on the scene all at once and measures the phase shift in the light reflected back to the image sensor.
In a nutshell, this allows you to capture images in superb detail and clarity.
The HONOR View20 doesn’t pull its punches in the performance department either. This handset features the company’s top-of-the-line Kirin 980 processor, which is the world’s first 7nm mobile SoC. The Kirin 980 is designed to provide excellent performance while being very energy efficient. In fact, it’s the same high-end processor that you’d find in more expensive flagship smartphones like the Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
With a SoC this capable, you’re almost guaranteed a smooth butter performance no matter the task. This makes the HONOR View20 ideal for daily browsing, heavy multitasking and even intensive gaming sessions.
One of the most outstanding features of the smartphone is the battery life. Packing a 4,000 mAh battery, this device allows you to stream videos up to 15 hours in a single full charge. To all the mobile gamers there, this massive battery also means more game time for you on the go. What’s more is that the HONOR View20 supports SuperCharge, which allows you to charge up to 50% in just 30 short minutes.
The All-View Display enhances your viewing experience, allowing you to fully utilise the 6.4-inch screen. This unique design allows the 25MP in-screen selfie camera to be placed on the top-left corner of the screen, occupying a minimal amount of space, giving you an unobstructed view. The Full HD+ IPS LCD panel provides great viewing angles and consistent colours, even in direct light.
Unlike most notched displays, the All-View display doesn’t utilise a notch or a big cutout at the top of the smartphone screen. Instead, it opts for a far less obtrusive punch hole design. The benefit of this is that this design makes it great for watching videos and gaming in full screen. This is because there is no notch, nor obtrusive feature to get in your way, or block important controls while gaming.
What’s more, the HONOR View20 is the first smartphone to go on sale in Malaysia with this punch hole design, making this handset the true OG.
The side of the smartphone is designed in a way that fits your palm perfectly when you hold it. You won’t feel uncomfortable when you clasp your phone, even if it’s for a long time. This also works well in landscape mode which is very useful especially when you’re playing games like PUBG Mobile and Mobile Legends where you must hold your phone throughout the entire gameplay.
All in all, if you’re looking for a smartphone that fulfils the role of what flagships can do at a reasonable price, look no further. Not only that, the smartphone has managed to bag multiple awards at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019, noting that the elite features and flagship performance has drawn exceptional responses from the media and influencers.
