The Sony RX0 II is a tiny action camera that comes with a flip-up display

Are you a fan of recording ultra-high quality footages without the need of holding a bulky DSLR wherever you go? If you are, Sony has something new for you.
We’re talking about the Sony RX0 II, dubbed as the world’s smallest and lightest premium compact camera.

What makes the Sony RX0 II a worthy contender against the likes of action camera giants like GoPro? Well, the RX0 II itself carries a lot of interesting features. Right off the bat, the RX0 II has a 180-degree upwards and 90-degree downwards tiltable LCD screen. This makes it an ultra-flexible device which allows you to monitor the screen from different heights and angles, which is great for vloggers.

Comparing to its predecessor, the Sony RX0, the RX0 II gets an internal 4K recording and improved image stabilisation for video recording. On the previous RX0, you’ll need an external recorder to capture videos in 4K. At its core, the RX0 II packs a 1.0-type stacked 15.3 MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor along with Sony’s very own BIONZ X image processing engine. The RX0 II also features the ZEISS Tessar T 24mm f/4.0 wide-angle lens.

The device supports continuous shooting at 16fps with up to 129 JPG images in a single burst. To minimise the rolling shutter effect when capturing fast moving objects, it also has an anti-distortion feature with shutter speeds of up to 1/32,000 sec. With an ISO range of 80 to 12,800, the compact camera promises to perform exceptionally in low light environments.

In terms of video, the RX0 II handles 4K recording at 30fps. It includes a microphone jack and in-body stabilisation, which is particularly useful in handheld mode. If you’re keen to record in slow-motion, you’ll be glad to know that the device features a 1,000fps recording mode with uncompressed 4K HDMI output.

Measuring just 59mm x 40.5mm x 35mm and weighing 132 grams, it is tiny enough to fit into your pocket. Despite its size, the RX0 II is built tough. Sony claims that it is waterproof to 10 metres deep, dustproof, shockproof and crushproof up to 200 kg of force.

If you’re keen to operate more than one RX0 II camera at once, you can download the Imaging Edge mobile app and you’ll be able to control five of them simultaneously. It is also possible link up to 50 cameras with an access point and up to 100 with a camera control box.

According to Sony Malaysia, the Sony RX0 II will be available in Malaysia in May this year and we don’t have any local pricing at the moment. The RX0 II kit with the VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip and bracket will be available in Malaysia in May as well. In the US, the RX0 II is priced at US$700 (about RM2,856).
