MCMC has denied rumours that 1Malaysia Internet Centres (Pusat Internet 1Malaysia) are shutting down. MCMC has issued a statement to clarify that the internet centres are still operating nationwide.

In the statement, they dispute allegations made by Nusuara Technologies Sdn Bhd which implied that the community internet centres are closing. Nusuara is the main operator of the PI1M centres that are running under Celcom. Both Nusuara and Celcom are told to provide an explanation to the MCMC as soon as possible.

To date, there are 870 internet centres nationwide and the project is an initiative under the MCMC’s Universal Service Provision (USP). The project provides rural and underserved areas with fast internet access along with courses and training to equip the local community with new digital skills including e-commerce.

According to NuSuara Technology’s website, they have setup and managed 174 internet centres as of April 2018. The internet centres are located in Johor, Perlis, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Perak, Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan KL.
