Ahead of MWC 2019, Oppo has showcased another new camera technology that aims to bring its photography game up to the next level. Two years ago, Oppo had presented its first periscope-style dual-camera system that offered 5X lossless zoom. Now the Chinese smartphone maker is doubling things up with a newer triple-camera system that offers 10x lossless zoom with a periscope system. Best of all, this isn’t some vapourware as Oppo will launch a smartphone with this setup in the next quarter.
Oppo’s new triple-camera setup consists of a normal wide camera, an ultra-wide-angle shooter and a telephoto lens that has a periscope mechanism. For steadier shots, both wide and telephoto cameras come with optical image stabilisation. According to Oppo, the prism in the periscope mechanism can also move at 0.001445-degrees in order to keep your shots steady with acceptable sharpness.
In terms of specs, the main camera is a 48MP shooter while the ultra-wide-angle lens has a focal length of 16mm. With the periscope camera system included, the upcoming phone offers a range of 16mm to 160mm. The periscope module is only 6.76mm thick, which makes it possible to be included in slimmer smartphones.
According to Oppo, their first smartphone with this new triple-camera innovation will be announced in Q2 2019. That’s sometime between April to June this year. We still don’t know if this device will be their upcoming Find or R series model.
