Interestingly, it looks like Asus will not be unveiling its new ZenFone at Mobile World Congress as expected. Instead, the company will be having its own launch event in Valencia, Spain on May 14 2019, to debut the ZenFone 6.
Asus took out a two-page spread in Mobile World Daily, the official newspaper for Mobile World Congress 2019, to reveal the fact. Last year, Asus announced the ZenFone 5 at an event in Mobile World Congress 2018.
A device purported to be the ZenFone 6 was teased in November last year. It features an unconventional looking notch that’s placed off-centre in between where a battery indicator and network signal bars are typically located. However, the leaked device may not be the final design as the advertisement in Mobile World Daily, shows something very different.
Not much information is available about the ZenFone 6 but if the ZenFone 5 is anything to go by then you can expect the upcoming ZenFone 6 to deliver high-end specs for a great value including a possible in-display fingerprint scanner and Snapdragon 855 processor. What can be seen from the ad is that the ZenFone 6 will feature an almost bezel-less design, possibly with a screen-to-body ratio of over 90% and maybe a punch-hole display or even a pop-up camera as patent filings indicate.
The original ZenFone 6 was released in 2014 along with a ZenFone 4 and a ZenFone 5. Back then, the number in the name denotes the size of the screen. Not long after that, Asus changed its naming convention and the number after the ZenFone name is used to denote the device generation instead of display size.
