Xiaomi has finally unveiled its latest Mi 9 flagship smartphone and it packs top of the line hardware at a lower price point. The Chinese brand had revealed a bunch of features in the past week and now we get to see the full details which include the world’s fastest wireless charging technology on a smartphone.
The Mi 9 features a 6.39″ Full HD+ AMOLED display from Samsung and it is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6. Instead of a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, the Mi 9 uses a newer generation optical in-display fingerprint sensor that claims to be more reliable.
Under its premium glass body is a powerful Snapdragon 855 processor that comes with up to 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM for the standard model. Onboard it gets 128GB of UFS2.1 storage.
For imaging, the Mi 9 gets a triple camera setup that comes with a 48MP f/1.75 main camera that uses a Sony IMX586 sensor. The device also gets a 12MP f/2.2 telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom and a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle shooter that offers a 117-degree field of view.
According to the
With the additional camera and improved sensors, the Mi 9 had scored 107 on DxOMark Mobile. This makes it the third highest rated camera smartphone after the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro.
In terms of battery, it gets a 3,300mAh battery which is quite small but it supports an even faster 27W wired charging via USB-C. The device is also capable of QuickCharge 4+ charging. If you hate cables, the Mi 9 supports 20W wireless charging which is the highest at the moment.
In conjunction with the Mi 9, Xiaomi has also introduced two 20W wireless chargers. There’s a 20W desktop wireless charger that’s priced at 99CNY (about RM59) and a 20W car charger that doubles up as a phone holder which is going for 169CNY (about RM102).
Connectivity wise, the Mi 9 supports 802.11ac WiFi with 2×2 MIMO support and it also comes with dual-frequency dual-antenna GPS which provides better accuracy for location-based services. Similar to any other flagship Xiaomi smartphones, it still lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack but you do get a 3.5mm to Type-C adapter out of the box.
If you’re looking for something extra special, the Mi 9 also comes in a transparent edition in collaboration with Alita: Battle Angel movie. Apart from the having a “see-thru” back, this special edition unit comes with 12GB of RAM and a larger 256GB of storage. In the camera department, it also gets a faster f/1.47 lens for the main camera.
In China, the base Mi 9 with 6GB RAM + 128GB storage is priced at 2,999CNY (about RM1,816) while the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model is priced at 3,299CNY (about RM1,998). Meanwhile, the transparent edition that comes with 12GB RAM + 256GB storage is going for 3,999CNY (about RM2,422).
Overall, this is an interesting offering and it is impressive that Xiaomi could pack even more features while maintaining a sub-RM2,000 price tag. The Xiaomi Mi 9 will be making its global debut at MWC19 on the 24th February 2019. We will be heading to Barcelona this coming weekend, so stay tuned to us for our first impressions.
