You probably shouldn’t buy a screen protector for the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+

If you’re the type that buys a screen protector or tempered glass for a brand new smartphone, you might need to reconsider your next purchase if you’re getting a
Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+. These are Samsung’s first smartphones with an in-display fingerprint sensor and it appears that a screen protector might hamper the performance of its fingerprint recognition.

Recently, a hands-on video had surfaced and it showed a Galaxy S10+ with a big cut-out hole right in the middle of the screen. This seems to imply that a cut-out-hole was necessary for the fingerprint sensor to work.

Last month, a case maker had tweeted that the Galaxy S10‘s in-display fingerprint sensor will not support screen protectors. As a result, one of their case lines will not come with a built-in screen protector for the upcoming Samsung flagship.

You must be wondering, why is this an issue since other in-display fingerprint sensor smartphones in the market could work with screen protectors on? The difference is in the type of technology used.

On current devices in the market, the in-display fingerprint sensors are optical-based where it scans a 2D image of your fingerprint. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S10 is said to be using an ultrasonic-based sensor that can map your fingerprint in 3D using soundwaves. Theoretically, this should provide better security and reliability compared to a typical sensor but additional materials on the screen might affect its effectiveness.

However, it’s still too early to tell if the Galaxy S10 will not support any form of screen protection. Perhaps, there could be an alternative that uses other compatible materials. We’ll definitely find out once the device is launched next week.

Are you fine with using a phone without a screen protector? Let us know in the comments below.
