Here’s what to expect from the Galaxy S10 and S10+ cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S10 launch is just right around the corner and now details its camera spec and features have surfaced online. With every new flagship release, the camera is often seen as a key differentiator. The current Galaxy S9 and S9+ had introduced variable aperture while the Galaxy Note9 took its imaging further with its AI-assisted scene optimiser. Here’s what to expect with the upcoming Galaxy S10 based on the latest leaks from XDA Developer and GSMArena.

Triple-camera with Ultra-wide-angle

The Galaxy S10 and S10+ will feature a triple-camera setup which now includes an ultra-wide-angle camera. According to GSMArena’s alleged Galaxy S10 spec-sheet, both the Galaxy S10 and S10+ will come with a 12MP f/1.5 dual-aperture main camera, a secondary 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle shooter that a 123-degree field of view and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera. Both 12MP cameras will have optical image stabilisation.

The Galaxy S10 and S10+ are also capable of recording ultra-wide-angle videos but according to a couple of lines of text in the camera software code, the video recording will be limited to 30 fps.

Improved Video Recording

For videos, Samsung appears to be adding a new “Super Steady Video” mode that will offer greater video stabilisation on the Galaxy S10 and S10+. From the discovered codes, it appears that you can’t zoom or apply extra effects if Super Steady mode is enabled.

Another new improvement is the support for HDR10+ video recording. This will offer better contrast and brightness for your videos.

1080p Super Slow-mo

After introducing 960fps Super slow-mo in 720p resolution on the Galaxy S9 and S9+, the next model is said to be able to shoot Super Slow-mo at a higher Full HD 1080p resolution. From the settings, it appears that you can shoot a 0.8-second super-slow-mo moment at standard quality and 0.4 seconds for high quality.

When it comes slow-mo videos, you’ll need adequate lighting or else it will turn out to be very noisy. It appears that Samsung is improving its low-light slow-mo capability as there’s a line of text that mentions “Recording mode optimised for low light” in its line of codes.

More AI assistance

With AI playing a bigger role in photography, Samsung has updated its Scene Optimiser feature to recognise a total of 30 scenes (+10 new additional scenes). Similar to Huawei’s flagship series, the Scene Optimiser is expected to be able to switch to portrait mode if you’re trying to take a picture of a person. The new Scene Optimiser is also said to be smart enough to recommend switching to ultra-wide-angle mode when it detects the right situation.

To help you to take better pictures, Samsung has also expanded its Flaw Detection capability. Apart from alerting you if the camera lens is smudged or if a person in the photo had blinked, the new version will recommend switching to specific modes and it also recommends turning your burst shot into an animated GIF.

To capture better images in low light, there’s going to be a new Bright Night feature on the Galaxy S10. This should be similar to Google’s “Night Sight” and Huawei’s “Night Mode.”

Front camera with 4K video support

Over at the front, the Galaxy S10 will come with a single 10MP f/1.9 selfie camera while the S10+ gets an extra 8MP shooter. Based on Samsung Vietnam’s teaser, it appears that the front camera will get optical image stabilisation and you can shoot selfie videos in 4K.

According to GSMArena’s leaked document, the Galaxy S10 is claimed to be the world’s first selfie camera with 4K video recording. However, it is worth pointing out that the recently announced Moto G7 Plus is also capable of shooting 2160p 4K video with its front-facing 12MP shooter according to its spec-sheet.

The Galaxy S10 launch is happening on 20th February (3am on 21st February Malaysian Time) and we expect Samsung Malaysia to offer pre-orders almost immediately after the global announcement.
