LG G8 ThinQ has a front 3D camera which claims to offer superior selfies and face unlock

The 3D trend appears to be coming back to smartphone with the introduction of Time of Flight cameras. You can find it on the OPPO R17 Pro, Vivo NEX dual-screen edition and also the Honor View 20.

Ahead of MWC 2019, LG has announced that their upcoming flagship, the LG G8 ThinQ will also feature a 3D camera. Unlike the rest, the 3D ToF camera on the G8 will be placed at the front and it is powered by Infineon’s imaging solution.

According to the announcement, LG has teamed up with the German chip maker to introduce Time of Flight (ToF) technology to smartphone selfie photo lovers. The Infineon REAL3 image sensor chip will play a big role where it promises to deliver a new level of front camera capability in a smartphone.

They explained that while other 3D technology uses complex algorithms to measure an object’s distance from the camera, ToF image sensor is more accurate where it captures infrared light that is reflected off the surface. As a result, ToF is said to be faster and more effective in ambient light, and this will reduce processor workload and power consumption.

LG also mentions that ToF technology is widely used in biometric authentication such as face recognition due to its high accuracy without being affected from external light. The 3D ToF camera also makes it ideal for AR and VR applications.

Essentially, we expect LG to use ToF to improve its computational photography capabilities for selfies. This should mean better portrait photos with accurate edge detection when it comes to bokeh effects. On top of that, we also expect better AR features than what Apple has to offer with their TrueDepth camera.

Speaking of Apple, it appears that the Cupertino company is also working on a similar 3D technology for its next generation iPhone models. Sony, which suppliers camera components to most smartphone manufacturers, had indirectly hinted, that long-range 3D imaging is expected to be a big thing for 2019.

Touching on the LG G8 ThinQ itself, the device will be their first flagship for 2019 which will go head on with the Samsung Galaxy S10. As leaked by @onleaks via 91Mobiles, the device will likely feature a 6.1″ display with a notch and it will run on the latest Snapdragon 855 processor. Similar to its predecessor, the G8 ThinQ will still come with a dual-camera setup and it still retains a 3.5mm headphone jack.
