Mobile crazy season is upon us as Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 is just a little over a couple of weeks away and you can expect all the major mobile players to be there to showcase their latest and greatest, including Sony.
Once a mobile powerhouse on par with the likes of Samsung, Sony is struggling to find its former glory with a disappointing line-up of lacklustre devices, but it looks like the Japanese brand is looking to rekindle the fire that earned it adoring die-hard fans with the launch of a three-device line-up at MWC 2019.
And if the latest round of rumours is true, Sony would be the first mobile manufacturer in the world to release a device with a 52MP camera, according to a leak.
The device in question is the upcoming Xperia XZ4 and this is what we know about the device it so far.
The Xperia XZ4 will feature a triple rear camera setup, one of which will have a massive 52MP sensor mated to a relatively fast f/1.6 lens. In addition, the triple camera array is expected to house a 16MP f/2.6 telephoto lens and a 0.3MP f/1.4 ‘Time-of-Flight’ (ToF) 3D camera that will mainly be used for depth or bokeh effects but also possibly for other 3D features like AR and spacial awareness not unlike that of the Microsoft Kinect.
Currently, the highest megapixel count you can get on a smartphone is 48MP. This is available on the Huawei Nova 4, Honor View 20 and the soon to be released in Malaysia, Redmi Note 7. Interestingly, the Nova 4 and View20 use the IMX586 camera sensor developed by Sony while the Redmi Note 7 uses a sensor that’s developed by Samsung.
Other than that, you can expect the Xperia XZ4 to feature a 6.5-inch display with a 21:9 aspect ratio, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a dedicated camera button along with support for USB-C and an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.
Several weeks ago, an alleged benchmark score of the Xperia XZ4 surfaced online. The test showed a score of over 390,000 on the Antutu benchmark. This, if true, is the highest score ever recorded on the benchmark platform. The Sony Xperia XZ4 is expected to run on the Snapdragon 855 processor which is Qualcomm’s latest flagship mobile processor for 2019.
The Xperia XZ4 is expected to make its debut at MWC 2019 in Barcelona. Sony Mobile has confirmed its press event on 25th February 2019 and we expect Sony to also reveal their mid-range XA3 series at the same event.
If you’re planning to get the latest Sony Xperia phones for 2019, don’t hold your breath as evidence suggests that Sony Mobile has exited the South East Asian market which means they might not be selling phones in Malaysia but who knows maybe they’ll make a comeback.
