Xiaomi announces the Redmi Note 7 with 48MP camera and 18 months warranty

The Redmi Note 7 is now official and this time Redmi is positioned as a sub-brand under Xiaomi. This is somewhat a similar situation as Pocophone. The Redmi Note 7 not only packs better hardware, it even gets a more premium build and a much longer warranty.

The Redmi Note 7 gets a 6.3″ Full HD+ display that comes with a tiny notch at the top. The front is also protected by Gorilla Glass 5. For a more upmarket feel, it uses 2.5D glass for both sides and the rear gets a reflective material which looks like the Mi Play.

Under the hood, it runs on a Snapdragon 660 processor that’s clocked at a higher 2.2GHz with up 6GB of RAM. As a result, it claims to outperform other Kirin 710 and Snapdragon 660 powered smartphones as it scores 144,599 points on Antutu. The Redmi Note 7 still comes with either 32GB or 64GB storage options that can be expanded further via microSD card on its hybrid dual-SIM tray.

For imaging, the Redmi Note 7 packs a 48MP f/1.8 main camera that uses Samsung’s GM1 ISOCELL sensor and a secondary 5MP shooter for depth of field effects. For selfies, it gets a 13MP main camera that comes with AI assisted beautification features.

To inspire greater confidence, the Redmi Note 7 is now covered by an 18-month warranty instead of the usual 12 months. There’s also a 7-day no questions asked return policy and a 15-day one to one swap policy for factory defects. It isn’t clear if Redmi will be providing a similar policy for the device when it is sold outside of China.

Powering the Redmi Note 7 is the same 4,000mAh capacity battery and it now charges via USB-C. The device even supports Quick Charge 4 fast charging but Redmi is only bundling a standard 10W charger in the box. Another good news is that the 3.5mm headphone jack and infrared blaster are also retained.

In China, the Redmi Note 7 is priced as follows:

3GB RAM + 32GB storage – 999CNY (about RM603)
4GB RAM + 64GB storage – 1,199CNY (about RM724)
6GB RAM + 64GB storage – 1,399CNY (about RM844)

Overall, the Redmi Note 7 is a huge step up from the current Redmi Note 6 Pro. It has better specs, a more premium looking build, a higher resolution camera and longer warranty while maintaining the same affordable price tag. This is probably the new king under RM1,000 when it comes to Malaysia.
